The Ports of Madeira continue to strengthen their position as one of the Atlantic’s leading cruise destinations, combining sustained growth with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation.
Following the recognition as the “World’s Best Cruise Terminal for Sustainability 2024” and “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination 2025”, Madeira is once again nominated in 2026 for both “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination” and “World’s Best Cruise Terminal for Sustainability”. These nominations reflect the work carried out by the regional port community and all tourism stakeholders in delivering a high-quality, sustainable cruise experience.
In 2025, the Region achieved the best year ever forthe cruise sector. More than one million people (1,024,442) passed through the Ports of Funchal and Porto Santo, including a record 746,257 cruise passengers, representing a 2.42% increase over 2024 and almost 20% growth compared to 2023. The number of cruise calls also reached a new milestone, with 331 ship calls, an increase of 4.74% over the previous year.
This sustained growth continues to generate significant economic and social benefits for Madeira, reinforcing the importance of close cooperation between ports, cruise lines, shipping agents, tourism authorities and the local community.
Sustainability remains at the heart of our strategy. The Ports of Madeira continue to implement the Funchal Port Environmental Plan, while actively participating in European projects focused on digitalisation, energy transition and decarbonisation, including Green Ports Madeira, DUAL and SHIFT2DC.
Environmental awareness is also promoted through community engagement initiatives. During the past year, the Ports of Madeira organised tree-planting activities involving local partners and promoted educational visits for students on board cruise ships, helping younger generations better understand the cruise industry, maritime careers and the importance of sustainable port operations.
Looking ahead, the Ports of Madeira remain committed to investing in innovation, environmental performance and operational excellence, ensuring that growth goes hand in hand with sustainability.
As a strategic Atlantic hub and a recognised cruise destination, Madeira looks forward to continuing to work alongside the international cruise industry in shaping a more resilient, innovative and sustainable future.
